Microsoft Content Management Page Programming

To effectively manage Web pages, you must understand the elements on a page and the progression of the page from creation through publication and update, including the statuses assigned to a page at each step. Users with different Microsoft® Content Management Server 2002 (MCMS) roles own the pages as they go through the publishing cycle.

A Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) Web page is published on a live Web site. Every MCMS page has a template assigned to it and each template contains one or more placeholders that hold editable page content.

Templates control the design of the page. A template may include, for example, a company logo, a background design, and a color. These elements are part of the template design and cannot be changed or moved by a user. Templates can be designed to ensure that a consistent look is achieved throughout the site, or several templates can be used to apply different looks to different areas of the site.

Placeholders are found within templates and contain the page content that can be edited by users. Placeholders keep the page content separate from the page design.

The type of content and formatting options in a placeholder are set by the template designer. For example, a template designer may decide that:

* A placeholder will allow a user to add text but not to change the font.
* A placeholder will accept an image only.
* A placeholder will accept a variety of content, such as text typed directly into it, drag-and-drop text or images, or other files from a folder or a desktop application.

Page statuses

After an author or content provider creates or identifies the content to be used in all the placeholders for a page, the page must be reviewed by editors and moderators, and it must be approved before it is published. Each time an editor or moderator makes a change to the page, or approves it, the status of the page changes. The status levels required to move the page ahead in the process depend upon the role of the user who created the content.
