I know some of my clients have a hard time deciding on which telephone platform to choose. They hear that VOIP saves money but the costs per month might be more then what they expect. Some companies rent the SIP phones and use open source like Asterisk on a Linux box with a Rhino T-1 card. Some people like my vendor install PBX systems with good old wiring and a PBX system the client can see. The client purchases this outright and has all of the features they want.
So why push to a VOIP system using Asterisks?
OK so VOIP has more features. It is really cool to take your phone home or have two phones one at the office and one at home and have the same extension. OR if you just have cable all you need is a sip phone and you are in business.
I personally think VOIP is good for small business. IT is better then centrex and the per minute fee is better. IF you have more then one office you can connect them with a VPN over the internet and save costs between the offices.
Open source is free and you can customize it to fit an application. Try doing this with an traditional PBX.
