The RSG allows restoring Exchange 2003 databases to an online, typically production server. These databases can then be used to recover either the entire database (also referred to as a mailbox store) or to recover or extract deleted mailboxes. In previous versions, prior to Exchange Server 2003, it was necessary to set up a separate recovery environment to perform mailbox recovery. In addition, the RSG aids in the process of recovering from using a rapid restore involving the reset of Exchange databases. Procedures for using the Recovery Storage Group are detailed in this document and a few troubleshooting tips are given. Considerations such as file locations, permissions settings and the impact on Outlook settings of using this type of recovery process are all discussed. The performance impact of performing the restore to an Exchange Server is measured, comparing several network technologies.

Traditionally, Exchange Server backup and restore focuses on protecting the Exchange stores, also referred to as databases. Backups are performed with Exchange services running (servicing users) but if a database cannot be mounted (due to some form of corruption), then the restore typically takes place while users are unable to access their mailboxes. Exchange Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 offer several storage and recovery enhancements that will address the issue of reducing outages due to database recoveries. Exchange Server 2003 offers the ability to retain deleted items (email messages, calendar appointments, etc.) and deleted mailboxes for a number of days, specified in the configuration of an Exchange store (or set through system policies on multiple stores). However, there may be circumstances where mailboxes or items need to be recovered that are not available in this retention cache. In previous versions, prior to Exchange Server 2003, it was necessary to set up a separate recovery environment to perform mailbox recovery. This may have also required several hardware configurations, for example to support a clustered Exchange server in this recovery environment (if recovery from a database originating from a clustered server needed to be performed).

The following are examples from that document: • Shadow Copy Backup: Leverages the ability to produce a copy of a disk volume using the Windows Server 2003 Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)2 and creates a copy of the Exchange database (and any other files on the volume). Disk activity such as backup can then take place against the copy volume rather than the original volume. The Shadow Copy volume can also aid in the rapid recovery of volumes containing Exchange data. The type of volume copy produced is usually dependent on the storage subsystem features. The storage subsystem creates either a clone or snapshot of the disk depending what is possible and selected by the administrator. Shadow Copy Backup will not be used for the recovery methods
