Recovery Storage Group (RSG): The RSG allows restoring multiple Exchange 2003 mailbox databases (from the same Storage Group) to an online, typically production server. Note that public folder stores cannot be restored to the RSG. The restored mailbox databases in the RSG can then be used to recover either the entire database (also referred to as mailbox stores) or to recover or extract deleted mailboxes. This paper will cover the configuration and process of using the Recovery Storage Group in both circumstances. The RSG aids in the process of recovering from a rapid restore involving the reset of a new Exchange database similar to the Rapid Online, Phased Recovery (ROPR) process
Another term for this type of recovery process is "dial-tone" service, where the reset of the production database provides continuous access to the mailbox and sending new email, while the historical bulk of the mailbox is recovered in the background. The ROPR process was designed for use in a Service Provider environment, and this "dial-tone" service is most effective when email is not stored on the server, such as when the client uses POP3 to retrieve email. There is an impact to Outlook settings when using this type of recovery, which will be covered later in this document.
Exchange 2003 Mailbox Recovery Center (MRC): The MRC can be used to re-associate restored mailboxes with Active Directory accounts. We will demonstrate the use of the Mailbox Recovery Center in this paper as we recover mailboxes from databases restored online to the Recovery Storage Group. In previous versions of Exchange 2003 , it was necessary to set up a separate recovery environment to perform mailbox recovery.
