The Cisco CCNP certification is undergoing a much-needed change at the end of 2006. The BSCI and BCMSN exams are being updated, with the BCRAN and CIT exams being retired as of the end of the year. Today, we'll take a look at the traditional first step on the road to CCNP certification - the Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI) exam.
The CCNP BSCI exam version expiring at the end of 2006 is 642-801; the new CCNP BSCI version is 642-901.
The Cisco CCNP BSCI outline indicates that you're not going to see topics removed from the exam as much as you're going to see new material added. The two major new topics are IPv6 and multicasting. Since the BSCI exam is generally considered to already be the toughest of the CCNP exams, the addition of these topics will make this a truly challenging exam.

This is actually good news for CCNP candidates, though! IPv6 isn't just the wave of the future, it's in use now in many networks. CCNP candidates who master IPv6 have a huge advantage in the exam room and the job marketplace, both at present and in the future.
You're exposed to some basic multicasting groups during your CCNA studies - the addresses 224.0.0.9 and 224.0.0.10 surely ring a bell - but the multicasting you'll be responsible for on the CCNP BSCI exam is going to be much more difficult. You'll need to know how to create multicasting groups and assign members to these groups. There are several ways to do this, but you just knew I was going to say that!

A major topic on both the 642-801 and 642-901 exam is BGP. Border Gateway Protocol has been a big part of CCNP BSCI exams in the past, and that doesn't look to change on the 642-901 exam.
CCNP candidates should check Cisco's CCNP website for any details added to the exam blueprint. Cisco is definitely raising the bar on CCNP certification in 2007, which is good news for those who go on to earn this demanding certification.
